Polish Attitudes Towards Ukrainian Aspirations to Independence. The article presents the role of the Ukrainian question in Polish history from the Kossacs wars (XVIIth century) to the present day and the attitudes of the Poles towards the Ukrainian aspirations to independence. In the author's opinion, the Ukrainians tended to show more sympathy to the Russians than to the Poles and their attempts at creating an independent state failed mainly because of the weakness of national consciousness among the Ukrainian masses. The author argues that every nation has the right to selfdetermination but that the Poles should not try to play the role of the « builders of Ukraine ».
