Eastern Europe's dependence on the USSR in respect of fuel supplies : 1945-1981. This article examines the position of the Six vis-a-vis the USSR in the context of fuel supplies in the post-war period, and tries to assess the development of their respective rates of dependence on the USSR. Three periods are noted. The first of these, up until the end of the 1950's under the so-called policy of self-sufficiency, was none the less marked by the movement of certain fuel supplies (coal, uranium, oil) from Eastern Europe to the USSR. This flow was reversed at the beginning of the 60's, when Soviet oil, and later natural gas, became the main sources of Eastern European dependence.
