Three questions were asked related to the now well established fact that parents simplify and adapt their speech addressed to language-learning children : (I) What are the effects of parental adaptations on the children's language development ? (2) What are the main variables controlling parental adaptations ? And (3) what new theory should be developped in order to deal properly with the data on the interactive aspects of language development ? The paper discusses questions (I) and (3), and presents original data as to question (2).
