Two samples of children aged from 3; 6 to 4; 0 and 4; 1 to 4; 9 had to dichotomize a logical set of materials either on the basis of only perceptive criteria (P) (characteristics of objects : form, colour, dimension) or on the basis of perceptive and representative criteria (PR) (form, colour and the picture on the object). It is o be noted that the materials and age clearly influence results. The results are commented upon generally with reference to a semantic hypothesis which is related to the hierarchy of the characteristics of the objects. This hierarchy concerning the representative aspects comes first in identification but second in a logical behavior.
