A new paradigm in the cross-cultural study of behavioural development provides a link between the interests and methods of anthropology and psychology. It is in this perspective that this paper first looks at some aspects of psychological development in infancy, and then reports some studies and new data on the daily activities of African children. The research reported was carried out in Kenya and Ivory Coast, using the method of spot observations. This allows a precise and quantified description of behaviour in natural situations. Results are provided on work and play, looking more specifically at sex differences in the frequencies of these activities.
