In order to contribute, in a genetic perspective, to the understanding of the nature and function of private speech during free-game activities and during the performance of cognitive tasks, several experiments were conducted which studied the internal verbal activity of about 360 children, aged 3-10 (three to ten), when placed in various experimental situations. The verbal activity was analyzed to determine the function of the verbalizations, as measured by certain indices derived from the subject's activity protocol, and, when necessary, to establish the relationship between verbal production and performance.
