The present study investigates the emergence and early development of utterance modality (declarative, exclamative, injunctive, or interrogative utterance-types) in child language. It is aimed at determining how basic communicative functions are organized in early language, and how formal linguistic devices (prosodie and morphosyntactic) are used to express these functional contrasts. The study was based on the longitudinal analysis of the naturalistic productions of a French child between 1;2 and 2;6. Declarative (the most frequent category), exclamative and injunctive utterances were found at 1;2, while first interrogatives appeared later and were infrequent.
