How is comprehension influenced by the various cues of the surface structure ? In an attempt to answer this question, 3 to 10 year-old children, were asked to act out different types of sentences : active, passive and sentences with relative clauses. The influence of the factor reversibility vs non reversibility was also studied. The results reveal that in younger children the comprehension is highly influenced by the order of noun-phrases. Only older children take into account other syntactic cues that are less salient, such as prepositions or relative pronouns.
