Self-perception of competence and academic achievement in first grade children This study investigated on a sample of 225 first graders, whether students 'perception of competence and intrinsic motivation (motivational resources) differed according to school subject right from the first school year. In addition, it aimed at verifying the link between these resources for each of the school subjects, and analysing their relationship with students' grades. Results indicate that for girls only, per- ception of competence and intrinsic motivation differ according to school subject.
