Quality of attachment refers to the parent-child relationship and to the child's state of mind vis-à-vis the parent. But it also, inevitably, suggests a great deal about the child's psychology in general. How does he feel about himself? What does he expect from others ? What does he do with his needs ? How does he express his love ? How does he express his aggression ? The classically ambivalent child will have a different pattern than the classically avoidant. Although few people may fully fit either of these classical patterns, attempting to answer these questions gives us a better understanding the psychological impact of certain types of parenting.
