In order to study the development of strategies in the comprehension of pronouns (subject and object) used in active and passive sentences linked by and, two experiments were performed with children (from 3 to 6 years old). In the first experiment, children were asked to act out sentences ; in the second experiment, they were asked to answer questions about the function of the pronoun. These studies revealed that : — Subject pronouns are mastered earlier than object pronouns ; — The gender of pronouns has no influence on the comprehension of pronouns, as early as 3 years of age ; — Strategies of comprehension are partly dependent on the experimental procedure (acting out us answering questions).
