Since the hypothesis that comprehension of a text is better when read silently than when read aloud has not been confirmed, new research has been undertaken in this area using different approaches and methodology. The results are comparable to those in previous research but isolate more clearly différents levels de comprehension, such as : one-off (or single) memorization, relationschip memorization, and textual intelligence. Equivalence of effects of reading modalities on comprehension raises the issue of reading pedagogy in elementary school, where the recognized objective is to prepare future adults readers for whom silent reading is more efficient.
