Stanislas Tomkiewiecz, Annie Triomphe: From Psychiatrie theories to practices: the example of mental deficiency. Theoretical concepts concerning the handicapped have undergone the greatest change in the area of mental deficiency. Such a transformation in naming and classifying people who are mentally deficient also brings about a change in dealing with them, living with them, and taking care of them. Changes in terminology and in psychodynamic and sociological approaches have brought out subtleties and shades of meaning which modify the simplistic concept which treats intelligence as a measurable quantity linking mental deficiency to a biological defect.
