Marcel Goldberg : This obscure object of epidemiology. This article is a critical study of the théories, methods and applications in the field of the epidemiology of socio- economic factors. The gênerai présentation of the main pat- tern is followed by a detailed analysis of the difficulties and limits of its use. Thèse difficulties dépend on the particulars of the variables representing the socio-economic environ- ment and on those representing the health phenomena on the one hand, and on the choices and définitions applied to each of thèse groups of variables on the other hand.
