ABSTRACT: The originality of the linguistic and semiotic theories created by Roger Bacon is now well-known; but his reflection on writing and writing systems has not yet retained much attention. His remarks concerning writing enable us to understand his way of developing his semiotic and linguistic theories in connection with the concrete study of various writing systems (Latin and Greek alphabets, Semitic and Far-East writing systems).
