ABSTRACT : A comparison between the 'parts of speech' discussed by Aristotle in his Poetics and those defined by Dionysius Thrax shows how radically different they are. An analysis of the Aristotelian notion of lexis gives the following results : 1) the lexis is not comparable to the modern notions of signifiant or expression, but rather to Austin's speech acts ; 2) the lexis is dealt with by Aristotle through the same theoretical apparatus as the one used in Physics and in his biological works on the living body, both being made of hierarchically organised parts serving specific purposes and activities.
