ABSTRACT : Some specialists of the history of the Arabic grammatical tradition have claimed that its theories and methods foreshadowed those of modern linguistics. More specifically, the analysis of syntactic constructions in this tradition has sometimes been more or less equated with immediate constituent analysis or dependency grammars. The present paper questions the validity of such views and aims at showing that traditional Arabic grammar, if it ever brought out a true syntax, did so relying on conceptual grounds that deeply differ from those which are familiar to us nowadays.RÉSUMÉ : Certains spécialistes de l'histoire de la tradition grammaticale arabe ont voulu voir dans ses théories et méthodes des préfigurations de la linguistique...
