Sur les sources du Ma shi wen tong

abstract : The first grammar of the Chinese language written by a Chinese scholar was published in 1898 only ; it is the Ma shi wen tong (Basic principles for writing clearly and coherently from Mister Ma) by Ma Jianzhong (1844-1900). This grammar, although it relies heavily on the Chinese tradition, is clearly designed like a Western grammar. The author himself acknowledged that his book « has been written on the model of Western grammars ». This paper first presents some European grammars of the Chinese language — compiled by missionaries or sinologists — which might have served as a model for the Ma shi wen tong. It is shown that one of them, Notitiae Linguae Sinicae by Prémare (1728, but published for the first time in Malacca in 1831) has certainly inspired Ma Jianzhong. However, when Ma Jianzhong speaks of the model of Western grammars, what he has in mind is obviously the grammars on Indo- european languages written by European scholars. After examining several possible sources, the paper concludes that among all the grammars that Ma Jianzhong might have at his disposal, it is likely that the Grammaire générale et raisonnée (better known under the name of Grammaire de Port- Royal) by Arnauld and Lancelot (1660) had outstanding influence on him. Cette grammaire, nourrie de tradition chinoise, est néanmoins de conception proprement occidentale. Son auteur lui-même l'admis : « Le livre a été écrit en prenant pour modèle des grammaires occidentales. » L'article présente d'abord des grammaires occidentales sur la langue chinoise — compilées par des missionnaires ou des sinologues — qui ont pu servir de modèles au Ma shi wen tong.
