ABSTRACT : The contents and methods of medieval Jewish linguistics owed much to their Arabic model. In Muslim Spain, in the tenth and eleventh centuries, the Hebrew linguistic tradition went through a highly creative phase, during which its basic notions, e.g. the principle of the triliteral root, were established through a series of great polemics. Grammatical works dating from this period were often written in Arabic. In the thirteenth century, the centre of linguistic study shifted to Provence and Italy, where various works were translated into Hebrew.
