ABSTRACT : Nineteenth-century French grammars, which emphasize syntactical agreement, included a set of words traditionally classed as pronouns and now generally considered as determiners in the notion of adjective. This article attempts to give an overview of the extensional and terminological variations of the category known as adjective from the beginnings of French grammar up to the terminology in use in 1975.
