ABSTRACT : This paper outlines the evolution of the psychological approach of language (psychology of language, psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology) since 50 years. It focuses on the theoretical and conceptual dependancy of this field on linguistic and computational models, which mainly developped the syntactical analysis of language. However, experimental results concerning language processing (specifically lexical processing) tend to prove the inadequacy of a single, unifying model to take account of the variety of psycholinguistic phenomenon. It is argued that the psychological study of language is at stake within cognitive sciences inasmuch it imposes to account both for linguistic universality and for determinants of meaning.RESUME...
