ABSTRACT : Comparing Saussure and Meillet with respect to the social character of linguistic facts reveals two very different conceptions of generality in linguistics. With Meillet, the social aspects of language refers to the historical diversity of external causes, thus leading to the ideal of a "general" science of language, that is anthropological and encyclopedic ; whereas, with Saussure, by focusing on the arbitrary, the internal character of language's social aspects leads to a generalness without generalisation and to the paradoxical, complex and prospective inclusion of linguistics within semiology.RESUME : La comparaison Saussure/Meillet à propos du caractère social des faits linguistiques met en évidence deux conceptions très dif...
