Symbol, scheme, imagination. An essay on the work of R. Giorgi. The relationship between symbol, scheme and imagination — long since touched upon, if not examined thoroughly — is dealt with in the discipline now known as « semiology ». The question arises whether semiology could now replace the traditional ontology of which it was once merely an appendix. It could do so only by expanding itself and becoming a full theory of the symbol, a symbology. The work of R. Giorgi is an introduction to such a symbology.
