La pêche à l'île d'Yeu

SUMMARY In spite of inadequate port facilities, Ile d' Yeu has become an important base for independant fishermen, thanks to the biological wealth of its waters and the maritime vocations of its inhabitants. The leading economic activity, ahead of the tourist trade, fishing gives livelihood to 52 % of the active population of the island. The diversity of its fleet makes it almost invulnerable to fluctuations in market prices and seizures. The « trades » practiced are quite varied : albacore fishing in the region of the Azores, trawl fishing, gill net fishing, longline fishing and fishing with cages in the Gulf of Gascony. Nevertheless, the present economic situation and the island's insularity pose serious problems as respects production and valorisation of its fish products. One can, nevertheless, hope that Ile d'Y eu will succeed in maintaining an exemplary equilibrium between its fishing and its tourist trade activities thanks to the growth of water farming (recent installation of a lobsler hatchery), which is already having a favorable impact upon the development of the Atlantic coastline resources.RÉSUMÉ Malgré l' insuffisance de ses équipements portuaires, rite d' Yeu est devenue une base de pêche artisanale importante grâce à la richesse biologique de ses eaux et à la vocation maritime de ses habitants. Première branche économique devant le tourisme, la pêche fait vivre 52 % de la population active de l'ile. La polyvalence de la flottille la rend peu sensible aux fluctuations des captures et des marchés. Les « métiers » pratiqués sont très variés : pêche au germon dans les parages des Açores, pêche au chalut, au filet droit, à la palangre et aux casiers dans le Golfe de Gascogne. Néanmoins, la conjoncture actuelle et l'insu- larilé suscitent de graves problèmes au niveau de la production et de la valorisation des produits de la pêche. On peut cependant espérer que l'île d' Y eu parviendra à maintenir un équilibre exemplaire entre les activités halieutiques et le tourisme grâce au développement de l 'aquaculture (création récente d'une écloserie à homards) qui favorise déjà l'enrichissement des fonds du littoral atlantique.Fournet Philippe.
