SUMMARY Among the major cities of the Charente-Maritime département, it is Royan whose growth has been strongest for more than a century. After World war II, gravely destroyed as it was, the city's reconstruction was accompanied by the development of a suburban area. At the present time, Royan's growth is slowing down, its birth and death rate and its relatively important net migration volume are positive. Royan has passed the stage of such small sea-side resorts as Châtelaillon and Fouras, but suffers from its isoled position.
