In this article the author, taking Finistère as his example, studies the evolution of passenger travel which is at present in an extremely critical position as far as short and medium journeys are concerned. It begins with the age of rail travel. The building of railway lines with the normal gauge between 1852 and 1884 brings Finistère out of its isolated position, but the network is soon seen to be inadequate ; hence the Freycinet-plan construction of local railways, extending in 1925 over 660 km as opposed to 292 km of normal lines. Then comes the age of road travel ; road transport revives and numerous road services compete with the railways. The railways lose ground.
