La reconversion du réseau Breton à voie métrique

SUMMARY Until the beginning of 1967, the interior of Brittany was provided with a narrow-gauge rail network created at the end of the nineteenth century. These installations allowed the region to overcome its isolation, but also contributed in making it an enclave in a country served fundamentally by standard- gauge rail. Having underlined the necessity of converting the rail network in Brittany, dictated by an increasing annual deficit, and having mentioned the proposed solutions, the author indicates that the adopted proposal was that of a single modernised line to ensure the penetration of standard- gauge rail into the heart of the region ; road transport services, complementary to this line, have replaced the other lines. He goes on to study the new traffic system and the consequences of the conversion which differ according to whether one considers the standard-gauge line (Carhaix-Guingamp) or the road network. It the more intense heavy road traffic aggravates the condition of the country roads, the region, in comparison with its former predicament, is today opened up for rail exchanges. The development of the town of Carhaix and its rising position as centre of attraction in West Argoad bears witness to this.RÉSUMÉ Jusqu'au début de l'année 1967, la Bretagne intérieure était équipée d'un réseau de voies métriques né à la fin du XIXe siècle. Cet équipement a permis à la région de rompre son isolement, mais a contribué ensuite à en faire une enclave dans un Etat desservi essentiellement par la voie normale. L'auteur, après avoir souligné la nécessité de la reconversion du Réseau Breton, dictée par une aggravation du déficit d'exploitation annuel, et indiqué les solutions proposées, fait connaître que la formule retenue fut celle d'une seule ligne modernisée, assurant la pénétration de la voie normale au cur de la région ; aux autres s'est substitué un service de transports routiers complémentaires de la première. Il étudie ensuite les nouvelles conditions de desserte et les conséquences de la reconversion qui différent, selon que l'on considère la ligne normalisée (Carhaix-Guingamp), ou la desserte routière. Si la circulation routière lourde plus intense aggrave l'état des routes de campagne, la région, par rapport à la situation ancienne, est aujourd'hui désenclavée au niveau des échanges ferroviaires.
