If we know the numerical relations between the sexes — « sex-ratio » — for the whole of the French population, it is only with the recently published results of the 1962 census that it is possible to calculate these relations on the level of towns and villages. We have chosen as samples the Vienne department and the Poitou-Charentes district. The analysis shows that the cities are more « feminine » than the country. In the latter, the masculin sex almost always dominates. These differences result from internal migrations which bring mostly women — of all ages — toward the cities. Therefore the « rural exodus » modifies the equilibrium of the sexes. In a technically retarded society, men are more numerous in the cities. But, on the contrar...
