In both Québec and France, the demographic structure of the workforce is changing while significant changes are also taking place in the organization of firms. Indeed, the evolving working conditions could put aging workers - whose numbers are growing - in a difficult position. In this article, we draw on various disciplines - mainly sociology, ergonomics and epidemiology - to bring together and discuss the results of recent studies conducted on this subject in both countries. This article first describes the principal trends observed in the demography of firms and in the dominant characteristics of the world of work. A model for understanding the relationships between age, health and the new forms of work organization is then put forward. This model is based on the degree of compatibility between work requirements and the individual and collective room for manoeuvre that workers can develop as they age and throughout their career path. Lastly, as an example, the results of this analytical process are examined in relation to two particular areas: non-standard working hours and job insecurity.Aussi bien au Québec qu’en France, la structure démographique de la main-d’oeuvre se transforme, alors même que se produisent d’importantes mutations dans l’organisation des entreprises. Or l’évolution des conditions de travail pourrait mettre en difficulté des salariés vieillissants, de plus en plus nombreux. Le présent article rassemble et commente les résultats de recherches menées dans les deux pays ces dernières années, faisant appel à des disciplines diverses (principalement la sociologie, l’ergonomie et l’épidémiologie). Ce texte décrit d’abord les principales évolutions constatées dans la démographie des entreprises et dans les caractéristiques dominantes du monde du travail. Un modèle de compréhension des relations entre l’âge, la santé, et les nouvelles formes d’organisation du travail est ensuite proposé, modèle fondé sur la plus ou moins bonne compatibilité entre les exigences du travail et les marges de manoeuvre individuelles et collectives que les travailleurs peuvent élaborer au fil de l’âge et du parcours professionnel.
