Population surveys involving disability status represent challenges both in conceptual and operational terms. This article compares two surveys, the health and activity limitations survey (EQLA) in Québec and the handicaps, disabilities, dependency survey (HID) in France. Although both surveys had highly similar conceptual approaches, different methodologies were used to deal with the challenges posed by this type of survey. Of particular note was the sampling strategy for screening the population under study. Moreover, both approaches led to quite different results for similar disabilities (visual, hearing, mobility, etc.).
