This article describes the principal characteristics of disability in the Quebec population aged 65 years or older in 1998, and its evolution since 1986. It is observed that, in 1998, there was a substantial increase, with age, of disability and the relative importance of moderate or severe disability. From 1986 to 1998, the increase in the disability rate among persons aged 65 or older was essentially due to an increase in light disability, with moderate or severe disability remaining relatively stable. Life expectancy at 65 years old and life expectancy without moderate or severe disability at 65 years old both increased by about one year during this period.
