After our study of the topoi published in 1993, the theme of the suicidal monologue in the Greek romances is examined here again in the light of rhetoric. It is found in the Ephesiacs, spoken by Habrocomes, who believes Anthia dead, and forms the wish to die himself, and to be buried with her in the same tomb. In Chariton, the variations are frequent and subtle, and contain many Homeric quotations. Chaireas is regularly stopped in his suicide attempts by a friend. But in his work, Callirhoe also has her suicidal monologues, and her renouncement of the fatal act comes from Chaireas himself, through a dream or through the presence of his portrait. Dionysios, Callirhoe’s second husband, plays a role. The examples in Heliodorus are interesting....
