This study concerns four romances in vernacular Greek and in verse which are usually grouped under the heading of “romances of chivalry”: Callimachos and Chrysorrhoï, Belthandros and Chrysantza, Florios and Platziaflore, Imberios and Margarona. Through the analysis of the three types of speech used by the characters – lamentations or “mirologues”, proper discussions and the metadiegetic analepses which allow the protagonists to take up again a part or all of their adventure –, one of the characteristic components of the poetic in narrative texts in vernaculary Greek of the late Middle Ages is demonstrated: the duplication of scenes and episodes.
