Identified during their destruction due to river improvement works, the remains of the old Fondettes bridge were the object of a re-examination and detailed plan during the very low water levels of the great drought of the summer of 2003. This research enabled the discovery of a caisson structure, formed by assembled beams halfway up the wood probably designed to support the pile-driver used to drive in the piles of one of the bridge supports of this wooden river crossing structure.
