Obaku culture is one of the less known and most interesting chapters of Japan history in the age of Tokugawa. The establishment of this monastic community, which grows in the same time into a center for Chinese studies, should be examined through the relations between the Chinese continent and the Japanese archipelago, in order to find its right place within the different trends of Buddhism in China and Japan.
