The appearance of the « untrammeled painting » (yi) in China in the middle of the 8th c. represents a critical juncture between original techniques, mostly but not exclusively related to the rise of ink painting, and attempts to classify those calligraphers and painters whose style did not fit into the standardized categories. Huang Xiufu in the « Catalogue of Famous Paintings in Yizhou » (dated 1006) gave the first precise definition of this new category and promoted it to the top of his evaluation scale.
