The gathering together of thirty-three illustrated folios from the Khamsa of Amir Khosrow Dehlavi, a manuscript completed in Sultanate India towards 1450 which is nowadays scattered around the world, allows us to identify some typical characteristics related to a group of paintings from Pre-Mughal India. Now we are in a position not only to consider the book as a whole, addressing questions about its original format, the frequency of its illustrations, and the more formal aspects of the work, but also to extend the discussion of these matters to the Sultanate painting more generally, a difficult and poorly examined subject.
