Following a discussion of what the word 'lear-ning'means in a museum context, Dierking reviews the large body of research which has examined the role of social mediation both within and between social groups in facilitating learning,. The review pays particular attention to the role of the social milieu in shaping the museum experience as well as the effects of the social context on the long term impacts of these experiences. The paper concludes that encouraging meaningful social interaction within the museum will resuit in increased learning.
