The relationship between the One and the Many gave rise to as many questions among the ancient Greeks as among the Chinese. Expressed in extremely different languages and based on fundamentally divergent ways of thinking, these questions were not tackled in the same manner and did not lead to the same kind of answers. It is, however, interesting to compare what was written on this topic by two thinkers of ancient times: the Chinese Xunzi (around 310-230 B.C.) and the Greek of Asia Minor, Heraclitus of Ephesus (around 550-480 B.
