The oppidum of Bibracte on Mont Beuvray, mentioned on several occasions in Caesar's Bellum Gallicum, was the subject of longterm excavations conducted by J.-G. Bulliot between 1865 and, 1885 and continued by his nephew, J. Déchelette, until 1907. The latter made substantial use of the material found on Mont Beuvray in his study of the culture of the oppida ; Bibracte thus became a type-site for the Late Iron Age. In 1984, at the instigation of the Ministry of Culture, excavations began again, with the aim of better understanding the evolution of Gallic society around the time of the Roman conquest.
