This paper examines the territorial epic of the Mormons, from 1830 to their colonization of Utah, by focusing on the symbolism of the trek across the continent experienced as the quest for Canaan, the appropriation of the land of the Utes, and the foundation of the theo-democracy of Deseret. It analyzes the urban planning of Salt Lake City, the new Zion designed to pave the way for the end of times.
