L'habitat du Bronze final Illb de Lombren à Vénéjan (Gard)

The Lombren Late Bronze IIIb settlement was fortuitously found out at Vénéjan (Gard) : not large in extent, it is situated on the abrupt hill-side over the Rhône valley, next to its top. A 12 m2 excavation led to the discovery of an area without building structures where some sediment had been spread by man (hearth cleaning) and trod upon by the inhabitants. The site and its artefacts are set in their regional context. In particular, the common hand-modelled pottery is certainly original if we compare it to the Mailhacien I which, during the Late Bronze IIIb, spread over the whole of Mediterranean Languedoc and North Catalogna. Is this originality due to chronological or geographical reasons? Does the settlement date from the early or late Mailhacien I or is it situated outside the scope of this culture? The documents to-day available in the North of Gard (Gauto-Fracho hill-fort, Banc-Pointu cave) do not yet allow us to reach a well-founded conclusion.Découvert fortuitement en 1981, l'habitat du Bronze final IIIb de Lombren à Vénéjan (Gard), de superficie modeste, est implanté sur la pente d'une colline abrupte dominant la vallée du Rhône, près de son sommet. Une fouille de 12 m2 a permis de découvrir un espace non bâti où s'est accumulée une sédimentation humaine (vidages de foyers), et sur laquelle les habitants ont circulé. Le gisement et son mobilier sont replacés dans leur contexte régional. En particulier la céramique non tournée présente une originalité certaine par rapport au faciès mailhacien I qui, au Bronze final IIIb, s'étend sur toute la façade méditerranéenne du Languedoc et de la Catalogne du Nord. Cette spécificité a-t-elle une raison chronologique ou géographique? Le gisement se place-t- il un peu avant ou un peu après le Mailhacien I ou bien se situe-t-il en dehors de l'aire d'extension de ce faciès? La documentation actuellement disponible dans le nord du Gard (oppidum de Gauto-Fracho, grotte du Ranc- Pointu) ne permet pas encore de conclure avec certitude.Dedet B., Charmasson Jean.
