The great naval mutinies of 1797 were the largest outbreak of discontent in the Royal Navy since 1653. Two successive mutinies at Spithead were followed by two others, one at sea in the North Sea Squadron and one on board of the ships at the Nore. The immobilization of the fleet (except in cas of French attack) was the most significative feature.There was no comparison with the revolutionary collapse of the French Navy in 1789-1790. Seamen were not opposed to war against France and they didn' want to destroy the social hierarchy. They hoped better conditions of service.
