The paper presents a brief history of the development of the learning theories and the three basic learning mechanisms studied by the « information processing » approach. The first mechanism is learning concepts from examples, the second mechanism is learning procedural Knowledge through problem solving, the third mechanism is learning by analogy. A discussion is presented which deals with the issues of learning a new knowledge domain, the differences between experts and novices, the generalization of an acquired knowledge.
