First the authors draw a critical picture of indicators of quality of teaching that were used until now. Then they analyse data about Malgascan elementary teaching and show why it is necessary to take account of : a) the growing division of intellectual task and subject matters différenciation ; b) the problematic relation between great tendencies and variances of distributions concerned ; c) mistakes made by pupils ; d) the multi-sided signification of factors which are assumed to determine the quality of teaching.
