A national survey was realized on the methods of teaching reading and writing in the 1st grade. A questionnaire was sent by the Ministry of Education and the University of Toulouse-le Mirail to 2500 1st grade teachers, of which 1251 were filled out and returned. There were 89 questions tied to 399 variables (many possibilities being available for every question). The analysis of the results gives some objective information, particularly, about where French primary teachers are situated between tradition and modernity.
