SUPC can occur in any newborn regardless of gender. Most often, this collapse occurs in the first two hours of a newborn's life during the so-called skin-to-skin contact that takes place immediately after birth in the delivery room. If the nursing staff caring for the newborn in the delivery room monitor the newborn's physiological functions throughout the skin-to-skin contact and educate the parents about the safe conduct of skin-to-skin contact in the delivery room and the subsequent care of the newborn, the incidence of this collapse can be greatly reduced.
