Winter School on Mariculture Technologies for Income Multiplication, Employment, Livelihood and Empowerment

Mariculture involves farming of marine finfish, shellfish, seaweeds, and the ocean ranching of juveniles of selected finfish and shellfish. In India, mariculture is a growing sector with great potential to provide a wide range of benefits on a national level, including the alleviation of unsustainable harvest rates of wild fish stocks, the enhancement of the Indian trade balance by providing additional products for export, and the development of new and promising economic and employment opportunities for coastal communities. However, the development of mariculture in India as a commercial sector would face a number of impediments. These include technological challenges, use conflicts in the coastal zone, environmental issues concerning water quality, ecological concerns associated with the potential genetic alteration of wild fish populations through the escape of farmed species, biodiversity issues and the possible barriers posed by a non-implemented Mariculture policy and regulatory framework. In an effort to bring more awareness on mariculture in the Indian context and its importance in achieving national priorities and sustainable developmental goals, ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is organizing series of human resource development programmes to different stake holders nationally and internationally. This Winters School on “Mariculture technologies for income multiplication, employment, livelihood and empowerment” scheduled for 07-27, February 2023 at CMFRI, Kochi-18 envisages, on making awareness among fresh academic and scientific professionals in the different aspects of mariculture and its role in achieving national goals
