Homeless in Paris: a classification of the use of services and shelters This article reports the results of interviews with homeless people who used shelters and soup kitchens in Paris in February or March 1995. The sociodemographic characteristics of the interviewees lead the authors to propose an explanation of the use of services by homeless people in terms of available resources that resembles Bourdieu’s theory of capital. The characteristics of most homeless people are those of the poorest segments of the population, though they have more or less available "capital”, including work skills and abilities, earning capacity, social supports, physical health, and mental health.
