JEAN-PIERRE TERRAIL The relative overeducation of girls is a recent phenomenon dating back to the 1 960 ' s. It is even more significant since these pupils are from a disadvantaged social origin. Regarding this phenomenon, the author focuses on the mobilization of these pupils (because girls' performances contradict the usual determinants of school failure) and on parents' involvement (because it starts at the very beginning of school years). Based on four surveys, the paper describes the rising preoccupation with school within the families, even within working class families which used to be less concerned with it.
